EOTO #3 Reaction: Cable News Evolution

Background:

Everybody watches tv, and mainly the news. Growing up, my parents always had the news playing on the TV throughout the day. I never gave it as much attention as I wish I had, but one thing I did notice was the difference in how the news was said by the anchors. This was because they switched back and forth between channels each day, but I never understood why. Some of the most common channels to stream are FOX News and CNN News, and these were the two news sources my parents rotated between. These two networks give two totally different sides of news stories, which makes them so relevant to viewers on television.

CNN News Network:

CNN was the first of the two created on June 1st  of 1980, with the first show airing at 6pm that evening. CNN started as the first “all-american” news network streaming 24 hours in the United States. Then, in January of 1982, the network launched its second stream of news, called CNN2. The difference between these two was that CNN2 reported only headline news. The event that made CNN most recognizable was that it was the only cable network to live stream the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster. After this, the network's views and audience grew an unbelievable amount. The next historic topic it covered was the Gulf War, giving the network an even more range of viewers. At this point, CNN was seen as the cable network that changed world news.

FOX News Network:

The FOX News cable network was purchased in 1985, but was finally created and launched in 1996. They did their news reporting and stories in full favor of the republican party, trying to be different and created competition with CNN. But while doing so, they shined a negative light on the Democratic Party views, causing the competition with CNN. FOX News' official position is that the reporting, anchor, and journalism stories come from opinion journalism. Opinion Journalism is defined as only writing in a favoritism style, focusing on only one “side” of a story. The ratings of this channel boomed in the early 2000’s, due to the coverings of the Iraq War, and the Presidential Campaign with George W Bush as the Republican candidate.
